Misericords of Church Gresley

Sometime between 1100 and 1154 William de Gresley founded an Augustinian Priory of which the church was part. After the dissolution of the monasteries the priory buildings fell into disrepair, however the nave of the priory church was maintained as the parish church.

The misericords are believed to originate from Drakelow, and donated to the church. They almost certainly post-date the restoration of the kings, as the Commonwealth would have been unlikely to approve of misericords – as shown by the number that were destroyed.
