Halloween as a Vigil
Dear Brothers and Sisters
The Church of England’s Thirty Nine Articles of 1563 rejected the “Romish doctrine of Purgatory”`, holding it to be “contrary to the Word of God”, and the practice of praying for the dead is denounced in the Homily.”
However, that’s not that helpful for people who are mourning. The Church actively encourages us to pray for those who are mourning and to help them remember, with love, those who have died. Halloween, in its modern ghoulish costume debacle, has, unfortunately, replaced a vigil that once upon a time gave a nation space to be still, to show respect and to remember. Reclaim that space and this Friday evening (late at night) give thanks for those who have died, loved ones, neighbours & victims around the world. Remember & give thanks.
God bless
Mike
